Jean-Claude Bünzli (
ÉcolePolytechniqueFédérale de Lausanne, Swizerland

Jean-Claude Bünzli studied at the University of Lausanne (UNIL, dipl. chem. eng. 1968), Swiss Federal Institute of Tehcnology, Lausanne (EPFL, PhD, 1971), University. of British Columbia (postdoc, Vancouver, 1971-73), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zürich (ETHZ, 1974-1974).
He was hiredat UNIL as assistant profesor in 1974 and full professor in 1980); he then moved to EPFL (2001-2010) and Korea Univ. (WCU Prof. 2009-). His research fields encompass: basics of lanthanide luminescence, luminescent bioprobes for time-resolved cancerous cell and tissue analysis and imaging, inorganic-organic hybrid materials for displays and lighting, imprinted ion-exchange resins for radionuclide analysis, application of lanthanide luminescence to photovoltaics.
In 1989 he founded the European and Actinide Society (ERES). He is the senior editor of the Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths and has co-authored more than 300 original and review papers in the field of f-elements and physical inorganic chemistry.
